POD Powwow.jpg (144499 bytes) Pinned on my bulletin board are several post cards that are photos of American Indians. Some are portraits, some depict a way of life. All the images are from the late 19th and early 20th century. And, all of them have a sepia toned color, as did most of the American photographs of that period. In my mind, I have colored that time in history different shades of brown. While at Julyamsh Powwow I struck up a conversation with a 20 something dancer. I noticed her costume was mended in many places and even missing a few beads here and there. She told me that she was the fifth generation in her family to dance in that outfit. I asked her permission to photograph her backside because of the detail. As she went off to dance with her toddler in tow, I started thinking about the significance of her gown. Conceivably, it was 100 years old and it showed no shades of brown. I did a comparison of sepia toning to the actual color and realized that the olden days were not shades of brown, but certainly very colorful. Here is the comparison for you to see.
