Nate Frisbie came to dunk last night. And dunk he did, and dunk and dunk. What a show! The first one he had his back to me, so being the "smart, professional and wise" old photog I am, I moved to the other side of the court. I figured he'd do it again being so early in the game. I was half right, he dunked again, a monster over a Moses Lake kid, again with his back to me. Darn! I was lamenting my troubles to someone, yes talking instead of photographing, and that little stinker grabbed a rebound or pass or something right in front of the basket and slammed another one! DAMN! Fun game to watch, thanks to all the T-Wolves.
12-19-07 Ben Frisbie and the Slam Dunk
Admittedly, the game was in hand. But when Ben Frisbie started his drive at the other end of the court, I could see "DUNK" written all over his mouth guard. WOW! Very cool. Way back in the dark ages when I played basketball, a player would be pulled from the game for "showboating". Thankfully in today's twenty-first century basketball culture, the dunk is embraced for what it is; an amazing play. It pumps the team, demoralizes the other team and the crowds LOVE it. Thank goodness the old school style of boring basketball is fading away. And what about the DEN? Everyone in the Den was so quiet when a Lake City Player went to shoot a free throw, you could hear a mouse fart. Now THAT'S different.
12-16-07 Prairie Spam
I would like to encourage anyone who is interested to look at Prairie Spam images. Click on Prairie Spam to see them. the last and latest is of a Barred Owl I photographed this morning, Sunday morning. No, I didn't go to church.
Thanks for looking.
12-12-07 Smash-mouth Basketball
Last night was the first time this season I have been able to see the Post Falls Trojans girls play basketball this season. They are a team to reckon with, those girls play smash-mouth basketball. I have never seen the Viking coaches so animated and believe they contributed to several make-up calls. The Trojans came out and bloodied the Vikings' noses, so to speak, with a 5-0 run to start the game and lead for much of the first quarter. But the Vikings stayed in their game and methodically punched back with two points at a time, spurts of transition basketball and a few three pointers to frustrate Post Falls. It would be much easier for me to comprehend if the Vikings had one player that stood out all the time. Unfortunately for me, they have at least eight players that star when ever they are needed. They have the toughness, the finesse and the quickness that will be hard for another team to match this season. Not to mention their speed.
Having said all that, I can't help but think Post Falls will be thick in the mix come the end of the season. Especially if they exploit Katelyn Loper better and more often. What a player! One girl I was looking forward to seeing play is Tori Davenport. I like her name but she is no relation to me.
I'm sure looking forward to seeing the Vikings and the Timberwolves Friday night. Especially the boy's game as I have not seen either team play this year. It's a great time of year!
11-28-07 Girl's Hoops, LCHS at CHS
The T-Wolves paid a visit to the Vikings last night but the Vikings were not to hospitable, beating the defending state champs. Whispers among the crowd wondered if CDA would shellac LCHS, but the T-Wolves held their own. It stared to look grim for them in the second quarter but they made a bit of a come back after the break. In the fourth, Coeur d'Alene seemed to dominate everything, except for Sydney Butler. She kept the Timberwolves in the game with her lights out shooting. I don't think I have seen her miss a shot. And she has great form.
If I had any worries about high school sports, my biggest one would be that CHS would lose track of their best players. They have more than 5 best players and I noticed that when a girl got fouled someone, another was put in, early in the game at least. And the thing is, when one was replaced, it was more like LCHS thinking "Oh CRAP" rather than "Good she's out". That team is DEEP, hope it doesn't cause trouble for them.
By the way, last night's officiating crew, John Posnick and Paul Manzardo, does not get any better. Those two guys are pros. If you have known me for any length of time, you would know that I have not always felt that way about one of them. Great job men.
11-17-07pm Girl's Hoops Madison at Coeur d'Alene
A man, a CHS fan came up to me at half and said, " The league ought to fine that Madison team". I looked at him and said, "Why"? He said " For not sending a better team up here".
In all fairness, LCHS and the Coeur d'Alene Vikings are very good teams. I have never watched girl's games this early in the season where they were not just flat out painful. Madison is not a great team, but the Vikings are really good. They are so deep, it seems everyone is a threat to score and their defense, OH MY DOG !!!! Amy Warbrick, Sadie Simon, Whitney Heleker, Dayna Drager, Ali Johnson, Kama Griffitts, Natalie Stewart, and FRESHMAN Carli Rosenthal, WOW!
11-17-07 Girl's HOOPS! Madison at Lake City
Joe Partington needs to make a recording; "Emma Hawn to Katie Baker!" He is going to be saying this A LOT this year. The T-Wolves looked pretty darn good last night as they pummeled Madison. Katie Baker, although only a junior, plays at a different level. I pray she stays healthy because she needs to play D-1 ball somewhere. Wow.
But, a new player has caught the Prairie Photography eye. This little girl comes out mid way through the first quarter. She looks like she belongs in middle school, like she is only 14 years old or something. She should be at the cotillion is what I was thinking. Then the ref blew the whistle for play to begin. Her ears pinned back and she unfurled claws and fangs, so help me Dog, fangs, and proceeded to tear up the floor. Turns out she looks like she is only 14 because she is only a freshman, fresh out of middle school, one of two on the T-Wolves team. She will make the difference in a game or two for the Timberwolves this year. And if she ends up with the ball while the T-Wolves are playing for the state title and down by one with 2 seconds remaining, the championship is in the bag. She reminds me of Coeur d'Alene's Sadie Simon a couple of years ago. A pure pleasure to watch play.
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention one of my favs, Amanda Krier. How does she ALWAYS find the open spot on the court? Teams will be hard pressed to find an answer for her. Thinking of an important game, I think Krier could will a win. She is great.
11-10-07 More stop and go
So, while driving north on Government Way approaching Hayden Ave., I had the green light. I watched as a fellow, west bound, stopped at the light then went just as if it was a stop sign. I was especially wary because, earlier in the day, I was behind a guy and we were at the red light. When it turned green he proceeded across the intersection, I pulled up to the crosswalk and hit my brake like it was a stop sign. Fortunately, I didn't stop and kept going, but confess to looking around to make sure nobody saw me do that. Be careful at those new stop lights!
11-9-07 Stop and Go
It's a sign of something, what I am not sure. There are now two working traffic lights on Government Way in Hayden. Although they have physically been there for a couple of weeks now, it is hard to comprehend them when driving down the road. The new sidewalks and lamps are also almost finished. At night, those street lamps are beautiful. Can't wait to see Hayden grow up around them.
10-28-07 State Volleyball
Fun weekend, was able to see Lake City play once and Sandpoint play two and a half times. Lake City took fourth in the 5A tournament, and in my opinion, a much better season ending performance than you could have asked for. Excellent effort by the T-Wolves.
Sandpoint opened up their 4A tournament by getting beat up by Rigby. Rigby surprised a lot of people, Sandpoint and me being two of them. The Bulldogs came back and showed them who was boss, then had to play a tough Century team. What a great match, culminating with a 24-22 5th game win for Sandpoint. Brooke Demers, Kaiti Lunde and and of course Piper Wahlin all looked great. There was a period where Lunde was ON FIRE, until of course, she was rotated out. I don't know anything about volleyball, but think I would like momentum to stay in the game. Of course, the Bulldogs won, so that is why I am a photographer and not a coach I guess. I talked to a few people about this rotating your best players out, and the opinions were many. One coach said that if it was him, he would want his best players in there all the time. I asked someone specifically about one player and she said " Oh, that player doesn't play back row," matter-of-factly. What does that mean? Doesn't play back row? What? This is high school!
Anyway, the Bulldogs ended up runner up to the Bonneville Bees, then best team at the 4A tournament. Although I had my camera, I just watched the Bulldog-Bees game. If was a nice change. Congrats Bulldogs, nice job.
Before the tournament, I thought high school volleyball couldn't get much better than Sandpoint's Team. then I saw Eagle play Lake City High School. Eagle was unbelievable. They reminded me of the undefeated Moscow team of 2005, I think it was. Totally dominant. I think they could give the North Idaho College Cardinals a run. It was tough to watch them beat up on my T-Wolves.
It was a great tournament all in all. Well run, and quality people, players, coaches and staff.
10-20-07 Moses Lake High School and LCHS Football
I thought about naming this post Byron Hout. What a football player. Byron Hout.
The Chieftans came out with a great offensive scheme and moved the ball right down the field on the Timberwolves. Hout was at linebacker and the Chiefs' slashing passing game was just too quick for the T-Wolves. Was a good strategy on Moses Lake's part, except that it appeared to just irritate Hout. Then, the LCHS coaching staff made an adjustment and put Hout, Matt Jereczek, and Sean Jolin on the line and went with what looked like five linebackers. I think that's when the Chieftans found out about Hout. After that series, I heard the Moses Lake coaches directing specific players to block Hout. The Chiefs were FAST, but Hout's speed blew them away. Then they had to deal with his toughness and ability to play football. Then they tried running through and around Jereczek and Jolin and found nothing there either. I was lucky enough to see Hout line up toward the center on a Moses Lake punt attempt and he seemed ramped up. That's when he blew through the Chiefs' line looking unblocked and stuffed the punt. Oh Man, WHAT A PLAY! Hout had an interception on a tipped ball, I think by Jereczek or Jolin, and caused a fumble, recovered it and ran for a touchdown.
Hout, Hout, Hout, but another of my favorite players, Christian Hanna, played incredibly well also. He had an interception and made key receptions on offence. I wonder how many tackles he had, I know he had a lot of them. Hanna's interception came off of a pass attempt over the middle as Hout, was about to crush the Moses Lake QB. What a fun game to watch!
In reality I should write every one of the LCHS players' name here as playing extremely well. That is a good football team.
One of the Chiefs' coaches asked why so few fans turned out to watch such a good football team. Good question. And it was senior night as well. I don't understand either.
Jessica Duran used a header off a Marissa Poorboy corner kick to score the lone goal on the first round of the state soccer tournament over at Post Falls High School today. It was dark and wet with rain on and on, yes that's right there was very little off, all in all a beautiful day. Especially for the Vikings.
That field over at Post Falls high school is a little rough. It reminds me of my little league baseball days, without the rocks. The fields seem much harder than at CHS and LCHS and the grass is not nearly as lush.
Hope you saw the sunset today. It is blinding. GO Vikings!
10-13-07 Post Falls at Lake City Football
Holy Cow! The Trojans are for real! Yes, the Timberwolves prevailed last night, but Post Falls play VERY well. To me it looked like they matched up with LCHS size wise, but not in the speed department, which may have been the difference. The T-Wolves could run outside, but seemed to have trouble with the Trojan defensive line. A Post Falls running back broke open a nice run toward the end of the game, but the LCHS secondary was able to run him down. And the play that may have changed everything, A Post Falls pass play where the ball caromed off someone's helmet and bounced sky high. LC's safety, Christian Hanna ran at least 15 yards full bore to catch the deflected ball for an interception, one of I think 3 or 4 he had on the night. It was a GREAT play. In Fact, I have only seen the T-Wolves twice this year, but both times, Hanna has made BIG plays. That young man makes a difference.
Speaking of young, Post Falls has a player, Dakota Allert, that was all over the field last night. That kid can HIT. I saw him with out his helmet on the sidelines, I would never guess his football ability by looking at him. He plays way beyond the years that he looks, make sense of that.
Lastly, the Post Falls coaching staff: I can not remember a PF coaching staff coaching to the positive more in a game. They did a great job. They handled a couple of more than questionable calls with maturity and were able to effectively communicate their concerns to the officials. Personally, I am very impressed with this apparent change in attitude.
The proper place for this is before the game. Coeur d'Alene High School's Lucy Thurman ( Sorry if I spelled this incorrectly ) sang the National Anthem with an amazingly angelic voice Thursday afternoon. Lucy, it was one of the most wonderful renditions I have ever heard.
The Lake City girl's soccer team beat Coeur d'Alene again this afternoon. And there was something familiar about the game, something similar to the last meeting: Ciara Kremer was the only one to score. The Vikings held her to one goal today, but that was enough to down Coeur d'Alene. Some VERY good soccer out there. An aside, the sound the ball makes when someone kicks it sounds like a lead ball being whacked. I am here to tell you that with 50 degree temperatures, that ball feels like a lead ball. And those kids are taking them in the head and body all day long. Ouch. Speaking of ouch, I hear Kremer plays basketball, too. Probably not good news for the Vikings.
Congratulations to the Lake City Timberwolves for their victory. Well played girls!
Last Friday night at the CHS / LC football game, I saw one of the LCHS volleyball coaches and she told me that the T-Wolves last home game was Tuesday night, last night. Darn, where did the season go? Last year Miss Suzan and I only missed one or two T-Wolves home games. This year, I only made it to one. Fortunately for me, head coach Jenny brought her BRAND NEW baby to the game, and the visitor was the Sandpoint Bulldogs, which in my opinion, features a sophomore outside hitter named Piper Wahlin. We saw her last year play at LCHS and she was mighty impressive. As a freshman, she could hit with any LCHS player. This year, although I haven't seen a lot of volleyball, I would wager that she can hit with the best of the best in any area high school volleyball team. The Bulldog coaches rotated her in and out, could be strategy, could be allowing the upperclassmen to play. I'd go along with the latter, but there is no way I could see any strategic move involving removing Piper from a game. She is relatively tall, brings a great attitude and can slap the volleyball as hard and accurate as anyone I have seen at the high school level. WOW! She is fantastic! To top things off, her name is Piper. How cute is that?! I've got to find out when and where the playoff tournament is this year.
9-23-07 The Marines landed
At about 1:30 Saturday, two Marine Corps AV-8 Harrier II jets landed at the Coeur d'Alene Airport. They came in to celebrate the renaming of the airport to Coeur d'Alene Airport / Pappy Boyington Field in honor of the famed WWII aviator. Those jets make me proud to live in the United States of America. Their thunderous flyover made a lump in my throat and my eyes sweat. Here is a picture of them flying by:
Those are some warbirds!
9-22-07 Coeur d'Alene at Lakeland football
Coeur d'Alene went out to Rathdrum and beat the Hawks 24-17
Friday night. It was the best game I have seen this year. Both teams played
well, both teams turned the ball over, but both teams forced turnovers also. Coeur
d'Alene has one of my favorite high school athletes in Nate Clinton and he was a
blast to watch. It doesn't matter what sport you are talking about, he is a good
player, period. Also noticed a guy from Lakeland, Kyle
Vandever, Lakeland #27.
This guy was all over the field, offence and defense. He carried the ball, he
blocked, he played in the secondary, he was mixing it up all over the place.
Vandever looked like he was having FUN. Same with Clinton, no doubt he had more
fun because his team won. It was a fun night, but I admit to looking forward to
the Coeur d'Alene Lake City match on Friday the 28th. It will be the first time
I have seen the T-Wolves this year. Good luck to both schools.
9-21-07 Susan G. Komen Volleyball for the Cure
Post Falls went to Coeur d'Alene High School last night for volleyball. Both teams wore pink shirts, CHS in dark pink, PFHS in light pink. It was a league match but also a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen foundation. Their mission is to find the cure for breast cancer.
Years ago I photographed the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure down in Coeur d'Alene. I suspect that it is coming up again, but the point is, although you might think of breast cancer as a disease exclusively to women, it is not. I have photographed several pink-hatted men. The vast majority of cases are women, but occasionally a man can get can be struck with this cancer. It is a fact that I was surprised about.
In the big picture, volleyball was secondary in the gym last night. If you can, visit the Susan G. Komen website and maybe send them a few bucks. Thanks.
PS, this girl can JUMP!
9-19-07 Soccer, LCHS is victorious
Holy cow! Those soccer girls a Lake City can play! I read in the Coeur d'Alene Press this morning that Ciara Kremer from LCHS scored all four of the goals that downed the Vikings by two Tuesday night under the lights at Lake City High School. Great performance by the T-Wolves.
Here is a vote for field turf from Prairie Photography. Soccer under the lights is fantastic, as lacrosse would be. If other events could be held there, too, it would even be better. Both CHS and LCHS have very nice stadiums as it is ( in fact that could be an argument for grass ) but the field turf would add something, what I'm not sure about. I suppose there would be an element of safety although that could probably be debated as well. In any case, Tom at Prairie Photography is all for field turf.
But back to the T-Wolves, great game girls. Can't wait for the rematch, I assume will be held at CHS. Wouldn't hurt my feelings to see it at Lake City again, under the lights of course.
What is INBC? It is the Inland Northwest Blood Center. Here are some reasons to go donate blood:
1) You could be and probably will be saving someone's life.
2) If you go late enough in the day, you can go buy yourself dinner at the Outback Steakhouse which is right next door.
3) You could be and probably will be saving someone's life.
4) You get snacks afterward.
5) You could be and probably will be saving someone's life.
6) Donating blood gives you a good feeling.
7) You could be and probably will be saving someone's life.
8) You can get a really cool red pen that writes in blue ink.
9) You could be and probably will be saving someone's life.
You have to be in good health and 18 years-old or older, or have parents permission if you are 16 or 17 year-old. The donating part takes about 5 minutes, but with the screening, the cookies and the trip over there and back, give yourself an hour. You will not receive any thanks from anyone other than the people who work and volunteer there, but know donating your blood is vital for our community.
Thank you in advance, from me, for donating.
9-11-07 Girl's Soccer, Lakeland at Coeur d'Alene High
The Lakeland High School girls traveled over to Coeur d'Alene High School for some varsity soccer. CHS, who both papers say has a very good chance at another state title, handled Lakeland 3-1 in a lackluster game. It was a bit warm out there, but really a perfect afternoon. The grass in and around the soccer field at Coeur d'Alene High is unbelievably lush. What a nice facility. Whoever maintains that field, GREAT job!
I have my favorite high school athletes and one of them is Sadie Simon. Sadie is a great athlete and very nice person. She scored a goal in the first period, but was injured early in the second and sat out the rest of the half. She walked off the field so I am not too worried about her, but when ever I see one of these kids slow to get up, it gives me a pain, too.
If you don't go to high school sporting events, try one. If you become involved with a team it is BIG fun. By involved, I mean just following them, on the field, in the paper and in the community. Thanks to them all for the great entertainment!
8-31-07 Football, Sandpoint at Post Falls
What else can happen? First a lightning storm forced the evacuation of the football field and stands. I thought it was a prudent move. I appreciated it even more as, sitting in the comfort and dryness of my truck, the rain began. But after the rain, the Trojans got on track and scored the games first touchdown. Then, the lights went out. Headlights from various vehicles illuminated the stands and parts of the field to light the way for players and spectators to leave. I read in the Spokesman-Review that the rest of the game will be played today at 2:30. Looking at the Sandpoint bleachers, I thought "Hmmm, that looks just like Memorial Field in Sandpoint". Honestly, they don't have much more light than the headlights that shown on them Friday night up there at all. Anyway, can't wait for the rest of the game.
8-27-07 Glacier National Park Weekend
Right after the O-Mok-See people saddled up and left town, I went over to Glacier National Park for a few days. What a beautiful place! Incredible scenery and I found out that if you travel the Going-To-The-Sun Road early in the morning or late in the afternoon, you have the place almost to yourself. Please go look at my Glacier page to see and read more about the place. If you can visit yet this summer/early fall, do it! If not, plan a trip next spring. It is well worth your time.
8-20-07 Western Weekend
What a weekend! Two days and an extra barrel race of horseback gaming at the Kootenai County fairgrounds. The Kootenai County Saddle Club hosted the 2007 Idaho State O-Mok-See and I got to shoot a ton of images. A few of my favorites can be seen here.
Three things that are wonderful to photograph are horses, women, and the American flag. At most western events, the trio combine for the opening ceremonies. It ALWAYS brings tears to my eyes, that is, the Star Spangled Banner playing with a queen of some kind riding through the arena with the American Flag. For me, it makes the event, regardless of the event.
On Sunday afternoon, I was just getting ready to for nap time, had my feet up and everything, when Dale and Tami Moyer stopped by the tent. I sort of already knew Tami was a really nice person but got to talk a little with Dale that day. These two people are so nice and indicative of the kind of people you meet at the western style horse events. I didn't get my nap, but you can sleep when you are dead, I guess. Thanks to both Dale and Tami for stopping by, it was great to talk with both of you.
To round off the O-Mok-See, a game called the exchange race was held. One rider stands at the opposite end of the arena from the mounted rider. The mounted rider gallops down, hops off and the other rider gets on and races back to the timing line. Its GREAT! These two guys, I think brothers, not only won the event, but in my estimation won the spirit award, too. They were great all weekend.
Thanks to everyone who helped Suzan and I have a great time!
8-10-07 Idaho State O-Mok-See and Football and Volleyball
High school football season is near! That reminds me of that great scene in one of the best movies ever made, Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles". Anyway, can't wait to see some football action. Be sure to check the "Event Pages" to see if I photographed your team. You can always shoot me an email "suggesting" the game you would like me to photograph. All this goes for Volleyball as well!
But to round out the summer, I am photographing the Idaho State O-Mok-See 2007 at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds in Coeur d'Alene August 17th, 18th and 19th. Should be a lot of fun, there is one more scheduled practice, August 15th. I think it starts at 5:30 at the fairgrounds. It might cost you $3.00 or so, but the money goes to the Kootenai County Saddle Club so its worth it. Plus you get to practice in the arena that the event will be held in. I don't know much about horses, but that has to be an advantage. You can get more info by contacting the Kootenai County Saddle Club. REALLY looking forward to Friday night's barrel races!
Hey, if you decide to go and watch, listen for any of these names; Kaylee, Tami, Cassie, Shelby, Myra. If you hear one, be sure to pay attention as these girls can RIDE! Its great fun indeed! Also, read Saturday's (August 11th) Handle Extra in the Spokesman-Review to see more of what O-Mok-See is all about.
8-5-07 A bunch of stuff
Costco - Rider Ranch - Softball
I'm not much of a Costco guy. Well, I wasn't a Costco guy until Friday night. Watching Barry Bonds strike out, I decided to go out and load up my canoe for a grebe trip Saturday morning. After loading up the canoe, I noticed my back tire was low. I have had a slow leak in it. So, I went down to get some air. This is a little after 8:00 in the evening. The air nozzle was a little stiff and after futzing with it, I somehow ripped my tire stem. It is now 8:10. Sears was nearby so I drove there since I left me cell phone at home. They had closed at 8:00. So what do I do now? COSTCO. I was very please to see the lights on at the Coeur d'Alene Costco. Noticing that the tore register said "closed" I told Jacob my situation. He changed out the valve stem for me at closing time. PLEASE!, if you need tires, go to the Coeur d'Alene Costco. First class all the way and extremely professional.
I attended a friend's wedding at the Rider Ranch. Since I was not shooting the wedding, I left the cameras in the barn. It was nice to just sit and enjoy the ceremony. Justin and his family are family to me, and I could not have been more proud of him. Amy was a beautiful bride, she could have been on any bridal magazine cover or fashion magazine cover. Congratulations to Justin and Amy. The wedding and reception was held at the Rider Ranch up Wolf Lodge Creek Road. This is an excellent venue! I think the Riders are new to hosting weddings because I didn't know this place was available until recently. It is gorgeous, an excellent use of the property. So check out the Rider Ranch if you need a country setting for an event. Here is an old picture of the area:
One of my surrogate softball daughters emailed and told me of a softball tournament at Franklin Park in Spokane where the Coeur d'Alene Crush and the Wildfire, also from Coeur d'Alene were playing Saturday. Miss Suzan and I went over for the 11:00 am game. What a great facility. One thing I really liked was how short the distance from the foul lines to the dugout was. Makes it tough to steal home on a passed ball, but also seems to make the game a little faster. The Wildfire came out on top, it was really fun to see some of these girls who I haven't seen since high school softball season. They are all growing up. Not sure I'd have recognized a couple of them if they were not in uniform. It was a nice afternoon. The fans were great, as usual.
7-31-07 Western Grebe
Noted wildlife photographer extraordinaire Tim Christie clued me in to the antics of an amazing little duck recently. Called the Western Grebe, it nests on floating rafts of vegetation and currently is nesting out on Cave Lake. I talked Suzan into canoeing me out near the sight of about a dozen nests Sunday morning and captured these images. Please, if you go, use binoculars or a LONG lens to view these wonderful critters so as not to disturb them.
7-25-07 Complaints
OK, OK Here is a new commentary page. Some people were whining about how long it took the other page to load. Well there was a lot of stuff on there so if you want to go back in time, the link to the past is above.
Today, Suzan and I had lunch at the Fort Ground Grill. Great place for lunch and even dinner from what I saw. Friendly staff, great atmosphere, great food, the Fort Ground Grill has it all. It has been completely remodeled, just a great little restaurant. If it rings a bell but you can't place it, it is in the Fort Grounds, 705 River Ave. on the way to North Idaho College. Great place. Here's a snap to remind you:
